William Foulkes and James Prince ran the route of The Glencoe Marathon to fundraise for Veterans Aid on 16th September 2017.
The pair raised over £2,000 and did the challenge independently after seeking approval from the organiser Jo Fox-Pitt.
Will had fundraised for Veterans Aid in the past – in 2014 he completed The Tough Guy Assault, one of the most gruelling survival contests in the country.
He said, “It was an absolute pleasure to support the charity again. I have had a bit of exposure to Veterans Aid over the last few years. I visited the Drop-In Centre in Victoria a few times, went to the Annual Meeting and attended the Carol Service at the Guards Chapel in 2016. On all of these occasions I have been immensely impressed with the work VA does to rebuild the lives of people who have fallen on hard times.”
James, who was briefly in the Honourable Artillery Company, added, “We both have military links in our families and we see how important the work of Veterans Aid is in transforming lives of ex-servicemen and women in crisis.”
James and Will have known each other for over a year – they were introduced by a mutual friend who was also in the Officer Training Corps.
The pair completed 26.5 miles in 6 hours 17minutes, which is a great result given that an average runner would take around 8 hours. The off-road marathon is an epic trail run that ascends a total of 1,608 metres through the heart of Glencoe and into the foothills of Ben Nevis. It encompasses some of the most beautiful and dramatic parts of the Scottish Highlands.
