A 59-year-old ex-serviceman who spent much of the pandemic as an NHS vaccinator is celebrating his birthday by embarking on a 725km hike to raise funds for VA.
Milos Stankovic is reprising a route he covered three years ago to challenge himself and attract donations to the charity he supports.
He said, “I am throwing myself back down the classic long-distance GR5/55/52 hiking route from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean in an effort to beat my 2019 time of 18 days. I’ll be doing it solo and sleeping rough under canvas to ward off the corrupting influence of comfort. The route is approximately 725km long with some 130,000′ of ascent and descent. I was three years younger then and I’ve spent much of the pandemic as an NHS vaccinator with the Mass Vaccination Team in Plymouth – jabbing and not tabbing. So, I expect this to be extremely arduous.”
His motivation, as a veteran who has served on operations in Northern Ireland, the Gulf and the Balkans, is to help Veterans Aid prevent fellow ex-servicemen and women from becoming homeless.
“I consider myself fortunate to have a roof over my head and have my basic security and safety needs met. Others are not so fortunate. They deserve our help and supporting Veterans Aid is one way to give it to them.”
CEO of Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy said, “What Milos is undertaking is no walk in the park and we’re deeply grateful to him for singling out VA as a beneficiary. I continue to be awed and humbled by the ventures people embark upon to support our work. The 725k Veterans’ Gambol hike, from St Gingolph to Menton, is an extremely gruelling one. I can only thank Milos on behalf of all at VA and urge everyone to support him with their donations.”
