Ex-servicewoman, Georgia, is taking on the Vitality Big Half Marathon in support of Veterans Aid, the charity that supported her father during some difficult times.
Georgia followed in her father’s footsteps by joining the Armed Forces. But when she left, she let her fitness go. That has changed recently, as she has been on a strict training regime to prepare herself for the run.
‘At the start of 2020, I decided to focus on improving myself, physically and mentally… Since then, I have found a love for running, which is something I never thought possible.’
The previous year, Georgia witnessed her father go through crisis, and Veterans Aid stepped in to support him. This has driven Georgia to raise funds for the charity.
It was a bank holiday weekend that Georgia’s dad found himself homeless with nowhere to go. Within a day, Veterans Aid got him a hotel room for the weekend, gave him money for food and arranged for his move into New Belvedere House. There he has been supported with his health and with getting back on his feet. Today, he is in a much better place: he is in the process of accepting a flat and becoming independent.
Georgia said:
‘The support and commitment that the staff at New Belvedere House give to all the residents is unbelievable, so this is something very close to my heart.’
The half marathon is scheduled for Sunday the 22nd of August 2021. To get her ready for the date, Georgia has been running 5km three times a week and going to a Bootcamp at least once a week. Within the next few months, she plans to gradually increase the distance of her weekly runs to build up her stamina and endurance. She has been enjoying her runs and is looking forward to them even more now that summer is approaching.
‘I never in a million years thought I’d be doing something like this, yet here I am. Who knows what I will do after.’
Georgia has her dad’s full support behind her.
‘My dad is my absolute idol and hero, and I am so unbelievably proud that he has served his country. He is the best man I know and would do anything for anyone. I am glad that Veterans Aid has given him the help and attention that he needs and deserves. I am so proud that there is an organisation out there helping our veterans.’
