A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of of Judge Hugh William Stubbs, 67, was held in The Parish Church of St Michael’s Cornhill in London on Thursday 8th May 2014. A collection in his memory was made for Veterans Aid and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Hugh Stubbs, a long-time supporter of Veterans Aid, retired as a partner with Freshfields in 1999 to dedicate himself to charitable activities and was President of the War Pension & Armed Forces Compensation Chamber. He died in London, on 31st January 2014, surrounded by his family.
Throughout his life Hugh had been involved in the work of many charities who benefited from his financial philanthropy and through the selfless donation of his time and extensive legal knowledge.
CEO of Veterans Aid, Dr Hugh Milroy, who attended the service with his wife, said, “It was a most moving service and I was immensely grateful that Veterans Aid had been chosen to benefit from the collection. Hugh Stubbs was one of those rare people you meet in life who are determined to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate. I was amazed at the numbers who attended the service from every aspect of his life. His livery company, The Merchant Taylors, stood by him to the end. The service was a fitting tribute to a great man. His work with Masonic and Merchant Taylor charities’ has left a significant legacy. He did all this with great humility . . .it was never for him but always for others!”
His sentiments were echoes by Chairman of the Headley Court Charity, AVM Tony Stables who said, “Hugh Stubb’s leadership of the Appeal Tribunal ensured an absolute assurance of fairness and justice for appellants. A man of great knowledge and conviction with a keen sense of humour, he will be very much missed and remembered by all whose life he touched. He really did make a difference. A truly lovely man.”
