The CEO of Veterans Aid, Dr Hugh Milroy, has accepted an invitation to become a rapporteur for the ESRC (Economic & Social Research Council).
The invitation follows receipt of an award to the council relating to British Social Attitudes towards the Military and Contemporary Conflict. It was considered that Dr Milroy’s experience and expertise in the field qualified him to comment from an informed perspective on relevant research.
All ESRC evaluation is based on peer and merit review. For individual research projects, including projects within programmes, other researchers in the field, and relevant policymakers or practitioners, are asked to comment on the achievements of the research and the quality and impact of the results. These peer reviewers are known as rapporteurs.
Dr Milroy said, “Running Veterans Aid is a demanding job and I thought long and hard about whether I would have the time to do justice to this invitation. However, this area of research chimes so accurately with everything the charity is involved in on a daily basis that I felt unable to turn it down. Research findings inform media reports which, in turn, shape public opinion; this drives political activity so it is of the utmost importance that information put into the public domain is accurate. I therefore welcome the opportunity to contribute to the process of ensuring that the highest standards of academic rigour are applied and that valuable grant funding is used wisely.”
Around 2,500 rapporteurs are invited to comment on ESRC research projects each year. They give their time generously in the interests of maintaining the highest quality research in the social sciences.
