Toby Cable, accompanied by dad Paul and family dog Lola, was met at the end of his trek by CEO of Veterans Aid, Dr Hugh Milroy, who said afterwards, “This is a wonderful gesture by Toby and a great morale booster for all of us at VA. It ¹s heartwarming to see someone so young taking an interest in a charity that helps people ranging in age from teenage to old-age.”
Toby and Veterans Aid CEO, Dr Hugh Milroy at journey’s end. Toby, Paul and Lola completed their journey from Cherington to Cirencester in approximately four hours and raised more £2,000 for the 80-year-old charity.
A pupil at Northcote Lodge Preparatory School in London, Toby is doing the Northcote Award, which is the school’s own mini-version of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Those doing the Northcote Award are encouraged to do something for charity and Toby ¹st choice was Veterans Aid.
He also came up with the idea of the sponsored walk from his family home to Cirencester.
Toby’s route took him along the MacMillan way across fields for 14kms to finish in the centre of town, where Hugh Milroy met him with congratulations, a much needed cup of hot chocolate and a piece of cake.
“They made it just in time,” Hugh added “As they finished their refreshments the heavens opened and it poured down!” Dad Paul said: “I am so proud of Toby – raising £2,000 is a real achievement and walking 14km with little legs shows great determination. He was a bit sore the day after the walk but very proud to be able to help such a worthy charity as Veterans Aid.”
