Sixteen current and former residents of VA’s New Belvedere House hostel enjoyed an open day with a military flavor thanks to the Western Heights Preservation Society.
The VA veterans and members of the charity’s staff travelled to Dover for the event, which featured exciting re-enactments from WW1, WW2 and the Napoleonic Wars.
The Society’s aim is to raise awareness about the Western Heights, which form the largest Napoleonic fortress in Britain – an essential base for the British Army throughout the 19th Century.
The event was the last opportunity for members of the public to see inside the fort this year.
Sarah and John Price, who have been volunteering at Western Heights for the last two years, gave the Veterans Aid’s group a personal tour and shared their considerable knowledge about its history..
VA Deputy Administrator Lily Paterson-Humphries said, “Sarah and John were very accommodating and made sure we had a great day. There was a lot of laughter through the day and everyone enjoyed learning more about the site. They especially enjoyed being able to hold the muskets!”
The visit was followed by lunch near the top of the Grand Shaft.
The VA visit was supported by Trustee Mr Paul Dyer and involved four members of the charity’s staff.
