It is with deep sorrow that Veterans Aid marks the death of HM The Queen.

Queen Elizabeth, who ruled longer than any other monarch in British history, displayed an inspirational sense of duty and commitment. Her relationship with the Armed Forces began in 1945 when, as Princess Elizabeth, she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), becoming the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services as a full-time active member. Over the years she maintained a close relationship with all branches of the Armed Forces through regular visits to service establishments and ships. She held many military appointments and honorary ranks.
In 2009 she introduced the Elizabeth Cross. The medal to which she put her name was instituted to give special recognition to the families of those who died on military operations, or as a result of terrorism, since 1948. With notable exceptions she also led the nation each year on Remembrance Sunday when it collectively paid respects to the fallen.
Her death marks the end of an era and she will be deeply mourned.
