Chelsea pensioners bearing gifts are an increasingly familiar sight in Stepney.
Tea, biscuits, socks, towels, tooth brushes and toiletries were packed into carrier bags that filled the general office of the hostel that is ‘home’ to nearly 60 veterans. Captain of Invalids Col. (Retd.) Mark Baker and colleagues also brought with them cheques totalling £130.
The two respected charities have a close relationship and host visits from one another on a regular basis.
In-Pensioner Marjorie Cole explained what both organisations gained from the friendship, “They are veterans and we are veterans and we are all part of the same family; our service forges a bond and although most of us are of different generations we all have something to learn from one another.”
Yorkshire-born Marjorie also took time out to contribute to the latest TTV film for Veterans Aid film is a record of the interaction between the two organisations.
Earlier elements were shot at the Royal Hospital where she joined fellow In-Pensioners watching a Veterans Aid vs RCH bowls match.
NBH manager Pat O’Connor said “We love having the Chelsea Pensioners here and enjoy our trips to the Hospital immensely. The last bowls match was a great success and I think we will have many more of the lads signing up for the next one.”
