The vision of a world-class facility for homeless veterans came a step nearer to realisation this week when architects Wimshurst Pelleriti announced another planning milestone.Tower Hamlets Council have given detailed approval for the redevelopment project that will transform Veterans Aid’s flagship hostel.
William Wimshurst, Design Director of Wimshurst Pelleriti, said, “We are very proud to be working with such a fantastic organisation and to be playing a part in improving the care they are able to give to veterans in crisis.”
CEO Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy added, “The refurbishment and upgrade of our New Belvedere House hostel is more than just a makeover; it’s an investment in the future. We have a model that works, but time has taken its toll on our buildings and facilities. The current project won’t just restore the status quo, it will future-proof our operations and provide an environment for those who spend time with us that sets them up for success. It was vital for us to work with a delivery partner who shared our vision and Wimshurst Pelleriti have met and exceeded expectations.”
The Fulham-based practice has a deep understanding of how design can influence and affect community, health and wellbeing, and has worked closely with the charity to ensure that the facility delivers in line with these aspirations. While working for Rogers, Stirk, Harbour & Partners, William Wimshurst was responsible for the Stirling Prize winning Maggie’s Centre in London, where the design of the building is a critical part of the care process. He believes in creating a domestic feeling even in large care settings and in structures that are airy, abundant with natural light and connected to nature.
“Like Veterans Aid we truly believe that the building we are creating will greatly enhance the wellbeing of its residents; they need to feel warm and secure and above all be uplifted by the environment around them. It is a joy for an architect to work with a client with aspirations like these.”
