On Sunday, 13th April 2014, Lizzie Hunt, a Regular Army Medical Officer specialising in Psychiatry, is going to run the 2014 Virgin London Marathon on behalf of Veterans Aid.
Lizzie, currently seconded to the NHS in South London, is also doing her Master’s degree in War and Psychiatry at King’s College. The Programme Director, Professor Edgar Jones, mentioned the work of Veterans Aid and Lizzie immediately got in touch.
She said, “I feel really passionately about supporting our troops, and I think that Veterans Aid’s work in both providing shelter, detoxes and occupational qualifications is really valuable.
“I’m so grateful for all the work you do, I know from my NHS work how difficult it can sometimes be to provide solutions to housing, vocational training, and legal difficulties. Veterans Aid offers a brilliant service to former servicemen and women, and plugs a very crucial gap.
Lizzie, a born and bred Londoner, got through the ballot last autumn and immediately started preparations for the Marathon. She runs a few times a week (often with her running club, the Wimbledon Windmilers), cycles to work and does yoga regularly to help keep her body injury-free.
“I always wanted to tackle a marathon, but given that I have knees that have always grumbled whenever I go over a certain weekly mileage, decided it was probably something I should only attempt once. Now I’m feeling a mixture of dread and excitement about 13th April. I’m thrilled that I’ll be running almost outside the hostel, and hoping to spot lots of people from VA!”
Lizzie’s race number is 12626. She will be wearing a white baseball cap, bright pink T-shirt and black leggings. So give her a big cheer if you spot her running in Greater London on Sunday!
