How we operate

Veterans Aid provides immediate, practical support to all ex-servicemen and women who have served in HM Armed Forces who are homeless, facing homelessness or in crisis.

The charity is governed by a Board of Trustees and enjoys the Patronage of The Dowager Viscountess Rothermere. It operates from just two locations; a Drop-in Centre/Head Office in Central London (Victoria) and a residential home (New Belvedere House Hostel) in East London (Stepney) but the charity’s reach is international.

Operationally VA is lean and flexible: The Head Office Executive comprises a CEO, supported by department heads of Accounts, Addictions, and Media. These are augmented by a highly qualified Operations Team, a Company Secretary/Administrator and specifically-roled professional support staff.

New Belvedere House Hostel staff are directly answerable to the CEO through a full time Manager supported 24/7 by members of a dedicated team. VA has access to barristers, solicitors, mental health professionals and substance misuse/alcohol counselling.

The charity’s relatively flat structure, open-door policy, wide network of contacts and well tested processes ensure that rapid and informed decision-making is routine. Homelessness is considered to be one of life’s major crises and Veterans Aid is distinguished by its reputation for immediate, effective intervention. Its light, geographical footprint belies an ability to act with speed over great distances, due in no small part to its use of reputable complimentary organisations as force multipliers – i.e. no money is spent on replicating what already exists elsewhere and can be accessed immediately.
